Pond Aeration
Aeration is the single most important factor in maintaining a healthy RikRock water garden or natural pond ecosystem. Aeration enables beneficial bacteria to colonize and compete against algae and speed the breakdown of organic matter. Fish need increased dissolved oxygen especially as they grow larger. Bottom aeration using an air compressor and air stones is the most effective and economical method for delivering this oxygen. As the bubbles rise from the bottom they pull the bottom water to the surface giving true aeration to the pond or water garden. Fountains are not aerators, they are water agitators.
They are incapable of pulling water from the bottom to the surface. This creates stratification (layers of varied oxygen levels and water temperatures). Bottom aeration systems destratisfy the entire pond or water garden giving the ecosystem and the beneficial bacterial program the ability to thrive.
